There are few places where I can honestly say I am “at peace”. Big Sur is without a doubt one of them. A California destination that Drew and I have been road tripping to since 2014. The scenic drive is about 5-6 hours up the coastline. You MUST take the 101/PCH, it is full of endless coastlines, green rolling hills, and dramatic seaside cliffs.

The coastal town’s “land meets sea” reputation comes from the juxtaposition of dense forest and long stretches of beautiful beaches. Big Sur is also known for a few fresh waterfalls that start in the mountains and flow onto the sand, making their way to the pacific ocean. We had the pleasure of spending a few days here this past weekend and from the many requests, we are sharing all our stops.

Each time we come here, we camp in your traditional tent. However as you all know, I make sure we have all of the “bare necessities”…AKA linen duvet, orange wine, sheepskins, canvas cot, woven baskets, etc. This year, we lodged in a campsite at Treebones. It was a truly magical escape. We think it might have to be our new “week before Christmas” tradition to get away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and simply enjoy the peace & quiet.

The Treebones resort was our type of nirvana. From exclusive autonomous tents and luxe yurts to tree houses, nests made from local driftwood, and oceanfront campsites, this place has it all. Our #1 recommendation is to treat yourself to their Wild Coat Sushi omakase experience. We dined in a yurt overlooking the sunset with an elaborate sixteen course menu incorporating the highest quality local seafood with notes of herbs and seasonings harvested from Treebones organic garden. Their natural spring water flows straight from the sierras and brings a whole new meaning to the word “hydrated”. They also have an on-site bee farm and self-serving garden to graze with the ocean mist overhead.

A few miles North is Sand Dollar Beach, a cove nestled in beautiful rock with waves great for a dip in the salt water on a warm day.

Other places to visit: McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer State Beach, Andrew Molera, Coast Restaurant, The Hidden Kitchen, Ventana, Big Sur Inn, Big Sur Bakery, Post Ranch Inn.

Don’t forget to do some antiquing in Cambria on your way home! They have one of my favorite vintage stores: Rich Man Poor Man Antiques Mall.
